Okay, so I may not have the key to happiness, but I found an interesting article called ‘The Happiness Project’ by Gretchen Rubin. I am usually not one to read Good Housekeeping, but when I came across this article, it was a must read! It focused on how pictures can increase your amount of happiness and joy.
By reading this article, it got me thinking about my life and how photos have effected me. My room is full of pictures from the year (of dances, holidays, birthdays, and get-togethers) which brings back memories of the good times you had that day or year or some other great memory you had. And according to Rubin, in our society we tend to remember the bad times a lot easier then the good; that’s where the photos come in. Photos scattered around the house and frequently looked at can trigger the good memories. Pictures are also a great way to share joy among family and friends: you can send your photos of the past or present to share your happiness from some spectacular event. The article also shared how photos bring a sense of calmness, which can come from your own photos or beautiful landscapes from the local craft store. And of course, photos have a great way to remind people of the happiness of their life and the things they are thankful for.
I also thought I should share a few of their websites and ideas to help encourage happiness through the art of photos. The first website they shared was Plum Print (plumprint.com), which can take documents and turn them into a memorial book. For example, most Mom’s have a pile of their children’s art projects, so send them into Plum Print, and they will return you the art and a book of the art. A great way to de-clutter! They also suggested Shutterfly (shutterfly.com). Shutterfly takes photos that you upload and turns them into a sophisticated book that you design yourself. As a photographer, I love this website! You can design a book any way you want with hundreds of templates and ideas. Pinterest (pinterest.com) is also a great way to trigger calm and happy thoughts: you can pin whatever photos you want to your boards, so whether that is Hawaii or Italy or new vacation spots, it gives you a sense of excitement. Another great idea to enjoy your life is the Project 365, which allows you to journalize your day-t0-day life through one snapshot everyday. This can allow you to be grateful for the little things in your life that make you smile. There was one last little tip that I thought was awesome! Make sure to keep your ‘bad’ photos: these photos are hilarious and will bring a smile to your face every time. Another suggestion was to take photos of the little things, like your bedroom or college dorm or grandma. These little things can become fuzzy and photos are a great way to remember.
This past week I had the oppertunity to be infront of the lends, instead of behind. As a young, hobbiest photographer, I was still in need of senior pictures to represent the closing of my high school career. I was … Continue reading →
Next time your at the beach and watch the wave pound into the sand, I want you to think of this man: Clark Little. This guy stands in the water and waits until the last second to snap his camera shutter then takes a beating when the wave collapses over him. I learned about Little from a forwarded email; most forward emails don’t even see my eyes, but this forward stopped me in my tracks! He is a Waive Bay shore-break surfing pioneer, husband, and father of two, and he has gained nation wide recognition for his photography.
It all started in 2007 when Little’s wife wanted a nice piece of art to decorate a wall. Voluntarily, Clark grabbed a camera, jumped in the water, and starting snapping away capturing the beauty and power of monstrous Hawaiian waves from the inside out.
This past week I had the oppertunity to shoot my very own sister in her favorite attire: her boots! We headed to the nature park for the beautiful green grass, wild flowers and a pure blue sky. She showed her … Continue reading →
